How Robertshaw Embraces Safety Year Round

June is National Safety Month. While we prioritize safety 365 days a year, we’re proud to honor our stellar safety record this month and reaffirm our longstanding commitment to promoting a safe work environment.

We recently sat down with Tim Zerzach, Robertshaw’s Global Senior Director of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS). Tim has been instrumental in setting our corporate-wide safety goals and providing compliance oversight across all our global locations.

Tim focuses on implementing standardized EHS programs and processes, leading and working alongside our site-specific safety managers throughout all our global locations. Among his many accomplishments, Tim has established standardized training programs, dispensed visual aids such as training posters and handouts, and implemented a company-wide safety culture.

While every country has its own unique regulations, we go above and beyond these minimum requirements. We ensure that every employee receives the same level of support and guidance. We take a proactive approach, enabling us to surpass today’s safety requirements and those of tomorrow.

Our EHS process emphasizes the following:

  • Promoting a culture of daily preparedness
  • Aiming for continuous improvement
  • Limiting distractions
  • Emphasizing simplicity
  • Encouraging collaboration
  • Discouraging reactive “clean-up” efforts only when ELT visits are scheduled

To establish safety awareness, we’ve implemented numerous company-wide initiatives. One example is our Pledge for Working Safely. By signing this pledge, our team members gain an appreciation for prioritizing safety every day. The Safety Always acronym represents this pledge.

Speak Up
Assess Hazards
Follow proper procedures
Eliminate risks
Timely report incidents
You are responsible for everyone’s safety
Allow for everyone to be heard
Look for opportunities to improve
Watch out for your fellow employees
Assist others when needed
Yes, I am responsible for being safe
See something, say something

Other programs we’ve initiated include a Safety Observation Program, in which we thoroughly analyze recent injuries (back and hand-related) to learn how to better avoid and react to them. This fosters a team-based approach to safety.

We’re proud of our long history of safety, and especially our recent emphasis on EHS, for which Tim has played an oversized role. Celebrate with us by making safety a priority in June and beyond.
